The Diploma of Performing Arts (Music) will prepare international students for entry into the music profession.

This course has been Accredited by TEQSA as an AQF Level 5 – Diploma course.

Diploma of Performing Arts (Music) is designed to prepare students for entry into the music profession. Your studies will include specialist performance classes, individual lessons and participation in ensembles – some classes will be integrated with ECU students.

Students who complete the ECC Diploma of Performing Arts (Music) (Year 2) will receive up to 8 units (120 credit points) advanced standing, the equivalent of the first year, in the respective Bachelor degree at ECU. A minimum of 50 percent pass in all units is required for progression to ECU.

Semester 1 units

ESB1101D – Ensemble Studies 1

Music making is frequently a community activity, and in this unit students participate in a variety of ensemble activities associated with their instrument/voice, Whilst singers might study drama, jazz musicians focus on improvisation, and classical musicians apply techniques of historically inspired performance, all students learn the need for teamwork, and for the ensemble’s various constituent parts to function as a unified whole. Students work towards the acquisition of ensemble skills, and through regular rehearsals and performances take part in a diverse array of rich and varied music. Vocal majors are also required to study Italian as part of their lingua franca.Students will attend ECU classes and join ECU ensembles for this unit.

MUS1201D – Musicianship 1

This unit cultivates and develops students’ core musicianship skills. Emphasis is placed on fundamental theory and discipline specific musical knowledge. Students develop a working knowledge of tonic sol-fa and engage in sight singing, rhythmic work, analysis and improvisation. The unit comprises students majoring in classical, jazz and contemporary music, and this diversity is mirrored in the music studied and the pedagogical approaches adopted. This unit aims to create aware and versatile, musicians.

PRS1301D – Principal Study 1

This unit develops basic interpretative and technical skills on an instrument or voice type of the student’s choice. Emphasis is placed on securing a working technique, establishing an effective practice routine, and assimilating effective presentation skills. Students select a major – either Classical, Jazz or Contemporary – work intensively with a mentor, and also participate in specialist workshop and performance classes.

Students receive 1:1 tuition with an ECC instructor for their chosen instrument. Students will attend ECU classes for any theoretical components aligned to this unit.

ACM1101D – Academic Communications and Music 1

This unit focuses on the language and communication skills necessary for effective participation in the study and practice of music at university. Academic listening, reading, writing and speaking skills are developed through the use of communicative activities, scaffolded assessment tasks and enhanced feedback. The material chosen for these tasks covers different periods in the history of western music from the middle ages up until the end of the nineteenth century. Students will also develop transferable skills in critical thinking, self-management and teamwork. The aim of this unit is to provide academic support to students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds.

Alongside the development of academic literacies, they will also develop an understanding of the expectations of academic study in an Australian university.

Semester 2 units

ESB1102D – Ensemble Studies 2

In this unit students participate in a variety of ensemble activities associated with their instrument/voice. Emphasis is placed on music making that is detailed, characterful and technically secure. Students develop

high-level listening and interaction skills, and through regular rehearsals and performances take part in a diverse array of rich and varied music. The unit demands a professional-level commitment, both in relation to musicianship and to timekeeping and attendance. Vocal majors are also required to study Italian as part of their lingua franca.

Students will attend ECU classes and join ECU ensembles for this unit.

MUS1202D – Musicianship 2

This unit develops and extends students’ core musicianship skills. Students are exposed to a wide variety of music, and using this as a catalyst, emphasis is placed on aural perception, critical listening and music theory. Students engage in sight singing, rhythmic work, music literacy, analysis and improvisation. This unit aims to create versatile and well-rounded musicians, engaged with, and sympathetic to, the diversity and breadth of the music profession today.

PRS1302D – Principal Study 2

This unit develops and extends students’ core musicianship skills.

This unit develops and consolidates interpretative and technical skills on an instrument or voice type of the student’s choice. A comprehensive suite of specialist workshop classes and individual lessons cater for contemporary, jazz or classical majors. Emphasis is placed both on strengthening technique and on understanding how technique can be used to create expressive and compelling performances. Students develop their critical listening skills and learn to articulate, in prose and in spoken word, the salient characteristics of particular performances.

Students receive 1:1 tuition with an ECC instructor for their chosen instrument.

Students will attend ECU classes for any theoretical components aligned to this unit.

ACM1102D – Academic Communications and Music 2

This unit consolidates and extends the skills learned in ACM1101D. Academic listening, reading, writing and speaking skills continue to be developed through the use of communicative activities, scaffolded assessments tasks and enhanced feedback. The material chosen for these tasks covers different periods in the history of western music from the beginning of the twentieth century until the present time.

Students will also develop transferable skills in critical thinking, research and teamwork.
