Surapi's story

By Sophie Waddell

Surapi Rubachandran, Sri Lanka – Diploma of Science (Health Studies)

Surapi is an international student from Sri Lanka, she is currently studying a Diploma of Science (Health Science). She was the highest achiever at ECC in Trimester 2 and she was awarded the Navitas Merit Award and received a 1-semester scholarship. We talked to her about her time in Perth and at ECC.

How did you feel about receiving the Navitas Merit Award?

It was an honour receiving the Navitas Merit Award, I was so surprised I actually screamed! The first thing I did was call my mother – she was very happy and very proud.

Why did you choose to study in Australia?

I’ve always wanted to study in Australia because it’s a place full of opportunities. I chose Perth for its relaxed atmosphere and because it’s on the coast. I come from an island and I wanted to keep living by the sea.

Where do you live?

I live in shared accommodation not too far from campus with people from all around the world. I really enjoy it because I have learnt so much about different foods and different cultures.

What are you studying?

I’m currently studying health science at ECC and next year I will progress into the 2nd year of the Bachelor of Biomedical Science at ECU. I’ve always wanted to work in the field of forensic science.

How has your experience been so far?

My experience at ECC has been very good. We get assessed gradually which I find makes it easier to learn. We also get a lot of support from the lecturers. They pay a lot of attention to our progress and always give very good feedback.

What would you say is the best part about studying at ECC?

The best part about studying at ECC is the attention you get from the lecturers which sets you up for success.

Could ECC be right for you too?
